Coleus ‘Dipt in Wine’

FN1.1 coleus dipt in wine

If you design with coleus, we have another unique variety for you—‘Dipt in Wine’. Take a look at the rich burgundy-colored leaves—how do you like the lime green scalloped edging? We think it’s a striking color combination—and the pattern is pretty cool, too.

‘Dipt in Wine’ performs well in full sun to full shade, though in full sun the lime green portions of the leaves can sometimes appear bright gold. Like most coleus it retains its vivid color throughout the season. As a bonus, this summer-friendly variety loves the heat.

You’ll find that it’s a fast grower, reaching a height of 20–36 inches with a nice upright habit. That’s tall for a coleus, so we often use this one in the middle to the back of the border. It spreads about 12–14 inches.

‘Dipt in Wine’ combines nicely with a number of other coleus selections. We like the way it looks with ‘Redhead’ and ‘Blackberry Waffle’—they pick up the wine red in the leaves. ‘Electric Lime’ is another way to go to amplify the bright green edges. Add Pennisetum ‘Princess’ for drama and some trailing Ipomoea ‘Marguerite’ and you’ve got a striking combination.

We often use this large variety when we have oversized planters to fill along a shopping center walkway. It’s also a great choice for large beds around amusement parks and stadiums or convention centers. It’s versatile and can be used for indoor displays in these venues as well.

  • ‘Dipt in Wine’ is available in the 8-inch pot; our other coleus selections come in the 8-inch size also.
  • Pennisetum ‘Princess’ is available in the 1 gallon pot.
  • Ipomoea ‘Marguerite’ comes in the 4.5 and 8-inch pot sizes.
