Transition Color from Summer into Fall

FN 1.4 RUD TigerEye Gold 0001
Rudbeckia ‘TigerEye™ Gold’

As you refresh summer displays, take into consideration the colors you choose because fall is right around the corner. Shades of gold, orange, red, and purple transition easily from one season into the next so use them wherever you can. A little forethought now means a design can quickly be updated with some strategically placed mums and autumn accents later.

Many of our fresh summer plants come in earthy tones that help bridge the gap from late summer into fall:

FN 1.3 RUD TigerEye Gold 0002
Warm orange-gold blooms

For rich golden yellow blooms, go with rudbeckia. ‘TigerEye™ Gold’ is a warm orange-gold and reaches about 16–24 inches tall. ‘Toto Rustic’ is bronze-yellow and ‘Toto Gold’ is golden yellow; they come in a bit shorter at 8–10 inches.

FN 1.7 HEL Ballad 0005
Sunflower ‘Ballad’

Our sunflowers provide that rich yellow as well, only in a dwarf décor size that’s great for smaller pots and window boxes. ‘Miss Sunshine’, ‘Ballad’, and ‘Choco Sun’ are all extremely petite versions of the classic sunflower combination—bright, sunny petals surrounding a dark brown center.

FN 1.9 ECH Cheyenne Spirit 0001
Echinacea ‘Cheyenne Spirit’

Echinacea ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is a pretty mix of red, pink, yellow, orange, purple, and white blooms that reach their peak from midsummer to fall. Plants have a bushy habit and reach about 24–36 inches tall.

FN 1.5 PEN Jade Princess 0009
‘Jade Princess’

Millet adds vertical interest to sun areas with a rustic autumn touch—plus it’s low-maintenance. ‘Jade Princess’ is a striking variety with wide lime green blades and showy burgundy-red flower spikes. It grows about 36–48 inches tall. Our other varieties include ‘Purple Baron’ (30–40 inches), ‘Purple Majesty’ (3–6 feet), and ‘Jester’ (3–4 feet).

FN 1.2 Purple Fountain Grass IMG 1595
Fall feeling with form and texture

Good ol’ purple fountain grass is another great plant for adding form and texture with a fall feeling. It reaches around 3–4 feet high with arching burgundy-red leaves and purple bottlebrush flowers.

FN 1.6 IPO Blackie 0005
Ipomoea ‘Blackie’

Sweet potato vine adds the finishing touch to a design with its pretty trailing habit. Ipomoea ‘Blackie’ has dark ebony leaves with purple undersides that enhance bright summer colors while creating a bit of intrigue that’s a nice jumping off point for Halloween themed displays.

‘Blackie’ and our rudbeckia, sunflower, and millet selections come in the 8-inch pot. ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is available in the 6-inch pot size and purple fountain grass comes in the 1-gallon pot.
