White Gardens
Gertrude Jekyll brought monochrome gardens to the forefront of garden design back in the beginning of the 1900s. Her painter’s approach to garden design issued a challenge to modern landscape designers, who relish the opportunity to live up to it. Can you build a satisfying full-season garden and stay within a limited color palette? Doing so tests a designer’s aesthetic and herbaceous skills simultaneously.
Although a Blue Garden might be the most challenging technically, White Gardens bend a designer's mind and bring out their best work. The nuances of white set against the vibrance of green can leave the most skilled designers scratching their heads.
Culturally, white brings social meaning to the table. Sometimes a white garden is referred to as a Wedding Garden; Moon Garden is another alias, when it’s paired with a Sun Garden in yellow on the opposite side of the property. A couple can take a nice, winding walk from day to night that symbolizes their journey through life together—with their home in the middle for the finishing touch.
