Fennel attracts butterflies

Herbs aren’t just for cooking. Their aroma can be intoxicating as they attract bees and butterflies to your gardens. Some even keep pesky mosquitoes at bay so you can enjoy the great outdoors.

Border of herbs

Change up sunny borders by adding rosemary or thyme—golden yellow and English—around your existing landscape beds. A mound of Italian oregano planted front and center makes an exceptional centerpiece.

Drop an herb container in the garden

Plant among existing flowers, containers or rock gardens. To add texture, mix in fernleaf dill or fennel for some wispy foliage. For thrillers, rosemary stands tall and spiky next to the vertical flowers on ‘Munstead’ lavender.

Chives and sage

Color up with basil and sage. Chives put on a dramatic show with their round, purple flowers atop strong green spikes.

Lemon thyme

As I mentioned, keep those mosquitoes in their place by mixing lavender, basil, lemongrass, lemon thyme, or rosemary into your beds. Sit back with a cool one and enjoy!
